I created this system because I failed this exact test (and definitely did not collect a prize) at my first freelance lead guitar gig:
Even worse, I failed it after learning at least 100 different guitar scales, and studying for over 20 years!
♫
My friend’s band was playing at a party and the lead guitar player couldn’t make it, so they hired me.
I got the call the day before. My buddy asked me, “hey Miles, you think you can handle playing lead guitar on a bunch of songs you’ve never played before?”
“We’ll just tell you what key we’re in before each song, and you can work your magic!”
After thousands of hours, practicing hundreds of guitar scales, I was obviously an expert.
So I said “No problem man, I got this! See you tomorrow!”
♫
I’ll spare you the details of that tragic day. Since I was pretty well versed in guitar scales after years of studying, I could eventually find each key by frantically searching through my long list of scale patterns.
The problem was that by the time I figured out which pattern to play and where to put it, I had already missed my solo, and the singer was moving on to the next verse.
I also realized that all my sweet licks were on my favorite couple scale patterns, and as soon as I tried to play in a new key it sounded terrible. It was a disaster. I barely made it through the gig!
♫
That night I went home and started over from scratch. I decided I needed the simplest and most direct path to being able to instantly and confidently play in any key.
The result is a bullet proof, time tested system that has worked flawlessly with hundreds of my guitar students, and that I use every day in my own playing.

Learn how to improvise in any major or minor key using 2 movable scale patterns! Once you master this system using pentatonic scales, you can apply it to the diatonic, blues, and harmonic minor scales to play in virtually any musical style. This approach works flawlessly for both advanced players and beginners.
♫ Day 2: A String Scale
♫ Day 3: Open Scales
♫ Day 4: Flavor & Style
♫ Day 5: Choose Your Scenarios
♫ Bonus: Blues & Diatonic Scale Charts
When you have mastered this simple system using these 2 pentatonic scale patterns, you can apply the same logic to the blues scale, diatonic scale, and harmonic minor scale depending on the musical style or vibe you’re going for.
Step 1: Find your note
This method relies on being able to find any note on the low E string or A string. Simply count up the string from the open note (E, or A) until you get to the note you’re looking for. The instructions will show you exactly how to do this.
Step 2: Place the Scale Pattern
Once you have successfully found your note on the low E or A string, simply slide the relevant scale pattern to that note. If you are playing a minor scale, place your index (pointer finger) on that note (shown by the yellow note on the scale diagram). If you are playing a major scale, place your pinky on that note (the orange note on the scale diagram). The guide includes both scale charts and instructions on how to use them.
